What are telomeres?

Every time a cell divides, its chromosomes must be copied. These caps, much like the plastic tips on a shoelace, keep DNA strands from fraying or sticking to their neighbors. Short chromosome ends are associated with a higher risk of age-related disease: cardiovascular conditions, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers and cognitive decline. Several factors speed up their erosion:

  • Chronic stress and persistently high cortisol;

Can you lengthen your telomeres?

An enzyme called telomerase can rebuild them. It is highly active in stem and reproductive cells, but far less so in most of our adult cells. Some studies, notably those led by Dr. Dean Ornish, suggest that a comprehensive healthy lifestyle may slow, or even slightly reverse, this shortening. The results are encouraging but need confirmation.

Caution is warranted with so-called activator supplements sold online: their effectiveness is not proven, and excessive telomerase activation has also been linked to certain cancers. Lifestyle levers, which are safe and well-established, remain the better bet.

The limits of length testing

Tests exist that measure the average length of these structures from a blood sample. While useful in research, their value for an individual is limited: measurements vary between laboratories, and a single result says little about a person’s future health. Rather than chasing a number, it is more useful to work on the habits that protect telomeres and overall health.

Oxidative stress, the main enemy of telomeres

To understand why lifestyle weighs so heavily on them, it helps to look at oxidative stress. When the body produces too many free radicals, driven by smoking, a poor diet, pollution or chronic stress, these unstable molecules damage DNA, especially the fragile ends of chromosomes. The result is accelerated shortening, like a candle burning at both ends.

Low-grade chronic inflammation plays a complementary role. Fueled by excess weight, inactivity or a pro-inflammatory diet, it speeds up cellular aging. Reducing both oxidative stress and inflammation is therefore the core strategy for protecting telomeres and, more broadly, slowing aging.

Varied-intensity training that mixes endurance and interval work appears especially beneficial. Prolonged inactivity, by contrast, speeds up erosion. The good news is that it is never too late: taking up regular activity improves markers of cellular aging at any age. The NHS recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week for adults.

There is no need to chase extreme performance: it is long-term consistency, far more than an occasional intense session followed by long stretches of inactivity, that protects telomeres.

Chronic stress and telomere length

This is one of Elizabeth Blackburn’s most striking findings: chronic psychological stress is associated with shorter telomeres. Studies conducted among long-term caregivers, in particular, showed accelerated cellular aging in the most stressed individuals. Studies confirm it: broadly healthy lifestyles, not any single miracle food or supplement, are linked to the best-preserved telomere length. It is encouraging news: while we cannot choose our genes, we retain considerable influence over how fast our cells age.
